UNFORGETTABLE GRANDMOTHER HJH. SALAMAH?

A Grandmother to All: Remembering Hjh Salamah Hj. Asari

For seven years in Malaysia, I was blessed with the presence of Hjh Salamah Hj. Asari, who returned to her Creator on 23 November 2025 at 3:00pm Malaysian time. Though I was far from my homeland, she never once treated me as an outsider. From the very beginning, she embraced me with the tenderness only a grandmother could give, making me feel seen, loved, and safe in a foreign land.

Her home in Pontian, in the village of Kayu Ara Pasong, was more than just a house. It was a sanctuary of comfort, laughter, and gentle care. Week after week, she welcomed us with delicious food, and with stories upon stories that she shared so generously. She was always asking about me, eager to know how I was doing, and her concern was never superficial. It was genuine, heartfelt, and deeply comforting.

She was profoundly accommodative, urging me to learn the Malay language during our weekly visits, encouraging me to embrace the culture she cherished. Together with Prof. Niza, we would deliver her groceries every weekend, and sometimes head to the farm and orchard to pick durian and other varieties of Asian fruits. One of the qualities that stood out most was Prof. Niza's consistency in personally delivering groceries to her beloved mother. When I once asked why not simply send money for them to buy, Prof. replied, "I get the opportunity to see her, talk to her, and make sure she lacks nothing." That act of devotion reflected the beautiful relationship they shared, one of mutual understanding and constant appreciation.

It is also important to note that Hjh Salamah was the beloved mother of my supervisor, Prof. Niza Sarmin, who is not just a supervisor but a mother to us all. The values of care, consistency, and generosity that Prof. Niza embodies are a living reflection of the upbringing and love she received from her mother. Through her, we continue to feel the nurturing spirit of Hjh Salamah, and that legacy remains alive in the way she guides and cares for us.

Hjh Salamah was not only generous to her family but to her neighbours and anyone who crossed her path. She was a woman loved by her community, admired for her kindness, and remembered for her open heart. I will never forget her warm welcome every Eid, when she gathered with all her family and made sure I lacked nothing. Those moments of joy and belonging remain etched in my heart.

Although the pain of her passing is heavy, I am comforted by my faith in Allah, the One who heals hearts and brings ease to those who grieve. I pray that He comforts me, her beloved family, and all who were blessed to know her. May He grant her Jannatul Firdaus and illuminate her resting place with His endless light.

I will truly miss you, always.

With love and du'a,

Till we meet in Jannatul Firdaus In sha Allah.
