Putin Warns West Russia Is Ready to Use All Weapons to Protect Kaliningrad

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia is prepared to use all the weapons at its disposal if Kaliningrad, Russia’s Baltic exclave, comes under what Moscow considers a direct attack.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin said Russia was “not threatening anyone”, but would respond if it faced aggression. He was responding to statements from some Western officials who have warned about the possibility of a future conflict with Russia.

Russia Raises Concerns Over Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad is a Russian territory on the Baltic Sea located between Lithuania and Poland, both of which are members of NATO.

Russian officials have repeatedly accused NATO of preparing military activities that could threaten the territory. Putin said that if Kaliningrad were subjected to a blockade, Russia would consider using all available means, including nuclear weapons.

“We are not threatening anyone,” Putin said, adding that Russia did not intend to attack anyone in the coming years. However, he warned that Moscow would respond if it faced aggression.

NATO Rejects Russia’s Claims

NATO has described itself as a defensive alliance and has rejected suggestions that its military exercises in the Baltic region are preparations to attack Russia.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance’s exercises and activities did not pose a threat to Moscow and called the Russian messaging unhelpful.

Tensions have nevertheless increased across the Baltic region, with Western countries reporting a number of incidents they describe as possible hybrid warfare activities linked to Russia.

Why Kaliningrad Is Strategically Important

Kaliningrad is separated from mainland Russia and lies between NATO members Lithuania and Poland.

A narrow area between Poland and Lithuania, known as the Suwalki Gap, is considered strategically important because it provides a land connection between the Baltic states and the rest of NATO territory while separating Kaliningrad from Belarus, a Russian ally.

Western officials have previously expressed concerns about the security of the region because of its strategic location.

Putin Also Warns About Nuclear Weapons

During his speech, Putin spoke about the destructive power of modern weapons and warned that no country could guarantee that nuclear weapons would never be used in a major international conflict.

He also raised concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence and digital technology in warfare, arguing that increasingly automated warfare could make conflicts more dangerous.

The latest remarks come as tensions between Russia and Western countries remain high following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The situation around Kaliningrad and the wider Baltic region remains closely watched by Russia, NATO and European governments.
