6 October 2026
An Australian Army soldier has died and five others have been injured following an incident during a military training exercise in the Northern Territory.
The incident occurred on 5 ghhvv. ,
, 2026 at the Mount Bundey Training Area, south-east of Darwin, according to the Australian Department of Defence.
Five Soldiers Taken to Hospital
Australian authorities said five other Army personnel were injured in the incident and were taken to hospital in Darwin for treatment.
The Department of Defence confirmed that the soldier's next of kin had been notified and asked the public to respect the privacy of the affected families while the investigation continues.
Reports from Australian media said the incident involved a military vehicle rollover during the training exercise. Emergency services responded to the training area, and the injured soldiers were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey Has a History of Training Incidents
The Mount Bundey Training Area is used by the Australian Army and its allies for live-fire and other military training exercises.
The latest incident has also brought renewed attention to the death of Australian Army Private Jason Challis, who was killed during a training exercise at Mount Bundey in 2017.
An inquest into Challis's death in 2019 found serious problems with the exercise, and the Northern Territory coroner described it as “shambolic”. The Department of Defence later pleaded guilty to a workplace health and safety offence.
Second Australian Soldier to Die in Training This Year
The latest death is the second Australian soldier to die during training in 2026.
In May, Special Air Service Regiment soldier Lachlan Muddle died after a mid-air collision with another paratrooper during a training exercise at Jervis Bay in New South Wales.
The cause of the latest Mount Bundey incident has not yet been fully disclosed, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
