Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the Portugal national team has been thrown intzcb ubmncertainty following a tense episode involving new head coach Jorge Jesus.

The situation has developed rapidly since Portugal appointed Jesus as Roberto Martinez’s successor following the World Cup. Jesus already knows Ronaldo well, having managed the veteran forward at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr last season.

Just weeks ago, Ronaldo appeared fully committed to continuing his international career.

“I had a conversation with our president, with our coach. I still believe that I'm able to help the national team to reach what they want,” Ronaldo said.

However, tensions began to emerge during Portugal’s recent international matches.

Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Wales, but Jesus subsequently informed him that he would be on the bench for the next match against Norway.

During the game, Ronaldo was asked to warm up for a significant period but was ultimately left as an unused substitute. It was the first time in 18 years that Ronaldo had failed to make an appearance in a Portugal match despite being named in the squad.

Former journalist and Ronaldo biographer Guillem Balague described the situation as unusual given the Portuguese captain’s status.

“There are tacit rules in football: you don't do that to Pele, to Diego Maradona, to Lionel Messi, to Cristiano,” Balague said.

At the final whistle, Ronaldo reportedly went straight down the tunnel rather than joining his teammates in acknowledging the supporters.

Jesus later insisted that there had been no falling-out between the pair. However, he confirmed that Ronaldo would also not start Portugal’s following match against Denmark.

The situation escalated when Ronaldo subsequently left Portugal’s training camp.

In a message posted on social media, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would eventually explain his reasons for leaving the national team

“In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated,” Ronaldo wrote.

Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença reportedly travelled to Copenhagen in an attempt to resolve the dispute. He arrived at around 02:30 local time to speak with Ronaldo, but the effort did not immediately resolve the situation.

Proença has since defended Ronaldo’s place in the national team, insisting that his selection should be based on sporting merit.

“He is in the national team on sporting merit, and that must be unquestionable. We have to pay tribute to Ronaldo,” Proença said.

Portugal went on to beat Norway in their final Nations League match on Sunday, once again without Ronaldo.

Following the victory, Jesus suggested that Ronaldo’s return to international football remains possible, but stressed that the decision ultimately belongs to the player himself.

“If he wants to, he'll return to the national team. We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who's going to decide,” Jesus said.

“He's the one who should decide how he wants to end his time with the national team.”

Ronaldo’s Portugal Future Remains Uncertain

The latest developments have raised fresh questions about whether Ronaldo will continue his international career under Jorge Jesus or whether the disagreement could mark the beginning of the end of his remarkable Portugal journey.
